Stage 3 CKD, GFR 51, Creatinine 1.2, What Should I Do

I am 46 years old. I was newly diagnosed with stage 3 CKD, GFR 51, creatinine 1.2. I feel very extremely frightened. What should I do?

Stage 3 CKD is a crucial period, in which you still have high chance of reversing kidney damage. So you should not postpone your treatment any longer.

In stage 3 CKD,the kidneys are impaired moderately with GFR decreasing to 30~59ml/min. As kidney function declines waste products can build up in the blood, resulting in many complications such as anemia, high blood pressure, fatigue, bone disease etc. These complications are significant risk factors in worsening renal function. So treatments and drugs should be prescribed to control these problems. For example, manmade EPO is often used to stimulate the production of red blood cells to treat anemia.

Diet is an important part of treatment for stage 3 CKD. A balanced diet can reduce strain on your kidneys and improve overall health. Based on your medical test results, your doctor or dietitian can help make a tailored dietary regime for you. You should follow their advices absolutely and you should never eat foods that you are not allowed.

If the causes of kidney damage is not controlled, it will cause progressive kidney damage. So you should be clear about the causes of your kidney disease and find ways to control it completely. Diabetes and high blood pressure are two common causes of Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD).

In stage 3 CKD, the structure and function of the kidneys have been changed. Diet and symptomatic treatment alone are not enough to reverse kidney damage at all. To reverse kidney damage and improve renal function, a treatment should be adopted to restore the impaired kidney tissues. If the diseased kidneys can be restored, more wastes will be filtered by kidneys. High creatinine will reduce and lower GFR will increase.
