How Long Can Someone Live with Lupus Nephritis

My wife was diagnosed with lupus nephritis. And everyone else in her family who has had lupus has lived for up to 2~3 years with it. Can you answer me the question and tell me how long she can live? Thanks again.

It is really hard to answer the question as the life span of lupus nephritis depends on variables. Luckily, 90% of the patients with lupus have a normal life span. However, some people may die of kidney failure and other complications like infections and heart failure. Renal failure is the number one death cause of lupus.

While there is no cure for lupus nephritis, a proper treatment can stop the disease progression and prevent it from progressing renal failure.

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system attacks multiple body organs and tissues mistakenly. If kidneys are involved, it will cause inflammation in kidneys. As kidney failure is the leading death cause of lupus, controlling lupus nephritis can reduce the death risk significantly.

To treat lupus nephritis effectively, the first treatment step is to suppress the inflammatory response in kidneys. Immunosuppressive drugs have this therapeutic effect and can stop further damage to kidneys. However, as the immune dysfunction is not corrected yet, when the immune system is activated, the inflammatory response will reoccur. That is why the patients with lupus nephritis encounter frequent relapses of the disease.

Therefore, in order to treat lupus nephritis effectively and completely, the treatment should focus on correcting immune system.

Immunotherapy is a new treatment option for the patients with lupus nephritis. This therapy aims at correcting the immune system and stopping the attack to kidneys and other organs and systems. This will reduce the incidence of complications of lupus greatly.

On the other hand, immunotherapy can stimulate the regeneration of impaired kidney tissues and cells to improve renal function. If your wife can avoid developing renal failure and other complications, she will have a normal life span.
