Can a Woman with Kidney Transplant Get Pregnant

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-09-23 14:04

After receiving a kidney transplant successfully, some women may wonder that whether they can start a family and give birth to a health baby. Study shows that chances of pregnancy after a transplant are high. Read on to learn more about this.

Get Pregnant after kidney transplant

The incidence of post-transplant pregnancy is approximately 12~20 percent. For a woman with well-functioning kidney transplant, her chances of having a healthy baby are about as good as for a woman without renal disease. Getting pregnant will not risk the kidney. Outcomes of pregnancy solely depend on pre-pregnancy kidney function.

▪ If the pre-pregnany creatinine level is <1.4, chances of having a successful pregnancy are 96%;

▪ If a pre-pregnancy creatinine is >1.4, the outcome drops to 70~75%. 1/3 of these cases end in abortion.

Risks and complications of pregnancy in kidney transplant

While the transplanted kidney functions perfectly normally, during pregnancy patients are at higher risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and early delivery. In general, the sooner patients gets pregnant after transplantation, the greater risk of developing complications.

It should be noticed that the highest rate of complications is within 2 years of the transplant. 2 years later, the risk will drop by 50%. All these complications carry an increased risk of both the mother and baby death.

When women consider post-pregnant pregnancy, they should firstly assure that the pregnancy can be successful. Moreover, patients are suggested to wait at least two years after the transplant before considering to have a child.

Before the final decision is made, patients should talk with their doctors in details about pregnancy and possible complications and outlooks. If you still have any question, leave us a message. Our experts will provide you with further analysis.
