Diet for Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

In stage 3 chronic kidney disease(CKD), your kidneys are damaged moderately. If you can change your diet and decrease the levels of wastes by making diet modifications, it will help you preserve your residual renal function and slow the disease progression.


In stage 3 CKD, if you develop proteinuria, you should limit the protein intake. If you are a diabetes, you should also cut down sugar intake. It is very likely to cause weight loss and weaken your immunity as well as cause other health problems. Adequate calories can help you prevent weight loss.


As the impaired kidneys fail to maintain the balance of minerals in your body, you should change their intake properly. Potassium is a mineral that acts as an electrolyte to help maintain proper muscle contractions and heart rhythm. It is a wise choice for you to limit the intake of foods high in potassium. Sodium may cause you to retain fluid and put an extra strain on your kidneys. When you develop stage 3 CKD, you should adjust your intake of sodium and potassium based on your lab values.

Fats and cholesterol

If the levels of fats and cholesterol are high, you are very likely to develop heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases. To reduce the risk, the saturated fats and trans-fats should be replaced by poly-and monounsaturated fats from vegetables oil, canola oil and olive oil.
