2012-12-02 15:06

Based on renal function, chronic kidney disease(CKD) can be divided into five stages. In stage 3 CKD, kidneys are damaged moderately with GFR 30~59ml/min. As kidney function declines, high levels of wastes build up in the blood, causing a myriad of symptoms. A healthy diet can help the patients to slow down its progression and delay the onset of renal failure.

Symptoms present in stage 3 CKD mainly include:

Fatigue is commonly seen in stage 3 CKD and it is usually caused by anemia.

The kidneys fail to filter fluids from body adequately, which can result in retention of fluids in body. Swelling may be noticed in lower legs, hands or faces around the eyes. In serious case, the lung may be flooded with fluids to cause shortness of breath.

Urination changes

Urination change one of common symptoms of stage 3 CKD. Urine may become foamy due to loss of proteins in urine. Also dark or red urine may appear if it contains red blood cells. A person may produce more or less urine, or get up to bathroom frequently.

Sleep problems

Sleep problem is one of common symptoms of stage 3 CKD. Some people have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Itching, muscle cramps or restless legs can keep them awake.

In stage 3 CKD, the patients usually are referred to a dietitian. Diet is such an important part in of treatment.

* The diet for people with stage 3 CKD should include a variety of grains, fruits and vegetables. However, some of them may be restricted if the levels of phosphorus or potassium in blood are above normal.

* Saturated and cholesterol should be restricted in diet and the total fats in diet should keep a moderate level, especially if cholesterol is high or if the patients have diabetes or heart disease.

* Limiting intake of refined and processed foods loaded in sodium and choose foods low in salt and sodium ingredients.

The above are the major symptoms of stage 3 CKD and the recommended diet. As the patients’ illness condition varies from case to case, it is essential for you to consult your doctor or dietitian to make a tailored diet plan.
