Treatment of Hypocalcemia in CKD

2014-04-11 07:57

Treatment of Hypocalcemia in CKDHypocalcemia is a disorder with presence of low serum calcium in the blood. This condition is commonly seen in chronic kidney disease (CKD). What is the treatment of hypocalcemia in CKD?

Hypocalcemia in CKD

Calcium and phosphorus in blood keeps in a certain relation in right condition. Their relationship is [Ca]*[P] =35~40. When the phosphorus level in blood is too high, the phosphorus level will decline. On the contrary, the calcium level will reduce. These two minerals play a vital role in keeping the bone healthy.

However, in CKD, the diseased kidneys fail to eliminate the phosphorus from blood. As a result, the level of calcium in blood will increase. Hypocalcemia will be the result in CKD.

In addition, vitamin D3 in intestinal tract can stimulate the absorption of calcium from foods. However, gastrointestinal tract is often affected adversely in CKD. As the vitamin D3 can not be absorbed from foods normally, it will also lower the level of calcium. This is also a contributor of hypocalcemia in CKD.

Treatment of Hypocalcemia in CKD

To treat hypocalcemia in CKD, one way is to lower the level of phosphorus. Phosphate binder is commonly prescribed to the CKD patients with high levels of phosphorus in blood as it can reduce the absorption of calcium from foods. Vitamin D 3 supplement is also applied.

However, to treat hypocalcemia in CKD fundamentally, a treatment should be applied to enhance renal function and improve the filtering ability of kidneys. If the kidneys can filter out phosphorus from blood adequately, the calcium level in blood will increase. If so, the hypocalcemia in CKD will be controlled.
