Can Iron Supplement Treat Anemia in Kidney Disease

2013-01-14 12:15

Can Iron Supplement Treat Anemia in Kidney DiseaseAnemia is commonly seen in kidney disease. The patients can experience fatigue, pale skin, weakness, headache and shortness of breath. Can iron supplement treat anemia in kidney disease effectively?

How does anemia in kidney disease occur?

Healthy kidneys can secrete a horme known as erythropoietin which can stimulate the production of red blood cells. However, in kidney disease, the diseased kidneys fail to produce erythropoietin, thus resulting in anemia.

Additionally, vomiting, nausea and other gastrointestinal diseases can reduce the intake and absorption of iron. Iron deficiency can attribute to anemia in kidney disease.

Iron supplement can provide some raw material for producing red blood cells. It can relieve anemia to some extent. However, iron supplement alone is not enough to treat anemia effectively at all.

As mentioned above, anemia in Kidney Disease occurs as the diseased kidneys fail to produce erythropoietin. Using manmade erythropoietin and iron supplement can give the patients a better improvement.

However, iron supplement and erythropoietin may bring some potential side effects. Oral iron supplements may cause stomach irritation and staining of the teeth. Using a straw to take liquid iron supplements may decrease teeth staning. Overstimulation of the bone marrow is a possible side effect of using erythropoietin. Also, it may cause pain at the injection site.

Iron supplement and erythropoietin only can relieve anemia in kidney disease, but can not control it completely. To control anemia effectively, the treatment should be able to restore impaired kidney structure and recover the secretory ability of the kidney. If so, the anemia will be controlled fundamentally.
