Should I Be Worried about Creatinine 1.4 and GFR 50

2013-11-04 11:15

Should I Be Worried about Creatinine 1.4 and GFR 50Normally, healthy people have two kidneys, and their GFR (glomerular filtration rate) ranges from 90ml/min to 125ml/min. GFR 50 is more likely to indicate nearly one kidney has been damaged completely. Therefore, creatinine rises to some extent. If you have creatine 1.4 and GFR 50, should you be worried?

Creatinine 1.4 and GFR 50

Because kidneys have great compensatory ability, you may not have any symptom with 50 ml/min of GFR. Actually, in this case, some uremic toxins such as creatinine and urea have begun to deposit in the blood.

For general population, normal creatinine level is 0.5-1.l mg/dl for female and 0.6-1.2mg/dl for male. Creatinine 1.4 is a little higher than normal level. It indicates extra creatinine settles in the body. If left alone, your serum creatinine level will rise continuously with the decline of GFR. The higher creatinine level and lower GFR, the more difficult to control your illness condition. Therefore, the prompt treatment is urgently needed.

How to deal with this problem?

As high creatinine is due to low GFR, creatinine level will decline spontaneously as long as GFR increases. To achieve this goal, the treatment should include three aspects:

1. Keep kidney filters from worsening

High blood pressure, diabetes, urine blockage, kidney stone, some medications, etc, all can cause the decline of glomerular effective filtration pressure. Finally, glomeruli can’t do its work properly. Therefore, finding out the cause of GFR to manage should be the first step of the whole treatment.

2. Increase the blood flow through glomeruli

GFR measures the amount of blood flows through the kidneys every minute. If the amount reduces, GFR declines accordingly. For this reason, extending blood vessels within kidneys can not only supply enough blood and oxygen but also improve GFR.

3. Repair glomerular filtration membrane

Glomerular filtration membrane is used to filter waste products, toxins and extra fluid, and retain useful nutritions. Once it is damaged, glomeruli are unable to do its work properly. Therefore, to repair glomerular filtration membrane is a necessary step for increasing GFR level.

Now, you can get a general understanding about how to manage creatinine 1.4 and GFR 50. If anything unclear or you want to learn some detailed therapies, you can leave me a message in the below form or send email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com.
