How Does Seizure Occur in Diabetes

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-10-01 17:08

Seizure in diabetes is a life-threatening event.Knowing how it occurs in advance can help its incidence significantly. It may result from high blood sugar or low blood sugar.

High blood sugar

High blood sugar is the condition in which blood sugar is excessively high. The central nervous system is made up of neurons which needs a normal level of glucose. Normal blood sugar level can maintain the normal function of neurons. If blood sugar level is too high, it will cause hyper-excitability of the neurons, thus trigging seizures. In other words, too much sugar makes the neurons work too much, causing the patients with diabetes a seizure.

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure is also a cause of seizure. Hypoglycemia seizures are actually more common than seizure due to high blood pressure. Sugar is the main energy for brain so low blood sugar can the activity of neurons in the brain. In the absence of this regulated function, the neurons respond by reducing the activity across synapses, the microscopic spaces in between neurons that propagate the brain’s activity and preserve bodily. As a result, seizure occurs in diabetes.

Electrolyte imbalance

Poorly controlled blood sugar in diabetes can disorder the electrolyte balance. Electrolyte imbalance is a trigging cause of seizure. For example, high serum sodium is a cause of seizure. If the blood has too much sodium, water will try to leave the brain. To preserve the quality of water in brain, the brain will increase its concentration of sodium-like substances. If the blood’s sodium concentration is corrected too quickly, the brain won’t have time to re-adapt to the new state. As a result, the water will flood into brain. It may cause cerebral edema, which can cause seizure.

The best method for seizure in diabetes is prevention. Therefor, it is very important for the patients to keep their blood sugar level stable and consistent as possible as they can.
