2012-11-04 00:16

As some fruits contain abundant sugar, many people stop eating fruits after they are diagnosed with diabetes. Can patients with diabetes eat fruits?

In traditional Chinese medicine, the patients with diabetes are recommended to eat ample fruits like watermelon, pears, etc as they can eliminate thirsty and relieve symptoms. However, western medicine thinks that fruits are rich in sugar so the patients should limit the consumption of fruits. If they eat fruits, they should reduce the intake of fruits. If not, it will elevate blood sugar and aggravate the disease.

Whether the patients with diabetes can eat fruits varies from case to case. Relying on the type of fruits, the patients can have proper amount of fruits. This can guarantee they can get enough nutrients from fruits, but do not affect blood sugar level.

The common fruits mainly contain sugar, starch, fiber and pectin etc. Carbohydrate covers 6%~20%, proteins 1% and fat 0.1%~0.3%. Additionally, they are also abundant of carotene, vitamin C, calcium, iron, zinc, arsenic etc and contain various kinds of inorganic salt, trace elements and a small quantity of dietary fiber. Fruits contain abundant sugar mainly fructose, sucrose and glucose and contain a small amount of fat. Vitamin, inorganic salt, dietary fibers are very important in preventing arteriosclerosis and retinopathy. To guarantee the supplement of nutrients that body needs, the patients with diabetes should have proper amount of fruits. The patients should select right fruits based on their own illness condition and the sugar content in fruits. If necessary, the patients should monitor their blood sugar 1~2 hours after eating fruits. Generally speaking, the patients with diabetes are recommended to eat 200 g fruits each day. Meanwhile, they should not eat fruits immediately after diet.
