Why Patients with Diabetes Have Dizziness

2012-11-19 16:32

Dizziness is commonly seen in diabetes. When it occurs, it can indicate a number of concerns. It may indicate low blood pressure, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia or other unrelated medical conditions.

Hypoglycemia

If the patients with diabetes consumes excessive medicines or do not have enough food intake, it may lead to low sugar level. Additionally, nerve damage can lead to rapid heart beat, low blood pressure, dizziness and blacking out when the patients stand up quickly.

Besides dizziness, if hypoglycemia occurs, the patients may experience a number of other symptoms like nervousness, shakiness, confusion, profuse sweating, fainting etc. If low blood sugar occurs, some sugar or sugar containing foods should be given immediately.

Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia is also a common cause of dizziness in diabetes. It can lead to dehydration and anerobic metabolism and cause changes in the acid-base balance. High blood sugar levels in the body affect several metabolic functions, and can result in fainting and dizziness. To prevent high blood sugar level, the patients should take medicines as instructed by the doctor and follow a healthy diet as well as exercise regularly.

Ear infections

Dizziness in diabetes may be due to other medical conditions such as ear infection and the diseases of middle ear. Apart from dizziness, the patients with ear infections may also experience nausea, vomiting, inner ear pain and headache. If left untreated, ear infection may damage hearing significantly.

As there are so many causes of dizziness in diabetes, if you are unsure why you’re experiencing the condition, you should go to see your doctor right away.
