People with Diabetes Are at High Risk of Stroke

2012-12-31 16:04

If you have diabetes, you are more likely to develop stroke than people without diabetes. Stroke is a very serious condition and it may threaten your life.

How does stroke occur?

In right condition, brain tissues can get constant and enough blood supply to function. The brain relies on a network of blood vessels to provide it with blood that is rich in oxygen. However, when the blood vessels are damaged or blocked, the brain tissues will not get enough oxygen and nutrient supply, thus resulting in stroke.

In diabetes, if blood sugar is not controlled, high blood sugar level can impair blood vessels throughout the body, leading to atherosclerosis. As a result, many of the bypass arteries are affected by atherosclerosis, impairing blood flow to the brain.

Additionally, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia are commonly seen in diabetes. They are responsible for poorer outcome in people with diabetes following stroke.

Stroke can be life-threatening to people with diabetes. Early inspection and treatment is important to help the patients avoid bad outcome. If the patients with diabetes present with the following symptoms, it may indicate a stroke.

Consciousness loss

Sudden numbness or weakness in one side of the body

Dizziness

Paralysis

Blurred vision or decreased vision in one or both eyes

How can stroke be prevented in diabetes?

※Quit smoking

※Keep blood sugar level with control

※Keep a healthy weight

※Have regular exercise

※Reduce LDL level less than 70 mg/dl

※Keep moderate consumption of alcohol

※Control blood pressure with normal range

If the patients with diabetes can follow the above measures, it can reduce the risk of stroke significantly. If you have other questions, please email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com .
