Can I Swim on Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)It is a pleasant thing to swim in hot summer. If you are no peritoneal dialysis, you may not be allowed to swim because of your catheter. However, if the patients can be careful enough and they still be able to enjoy a little splishing and splashing.

As you know,a peritoneal dialysis catheter is a pathway in the peritoneum-which is meant to be sterile. If any germs get into your body through the catheter,you are very likely to develop peritonitis.Some peritoneal dialysis programs does not allow you to swim for this reason.

If you programs support swimming, here are some general tips for swimming with a peritoneal Dialysis catheter.

*You can swim in an ocean because the salt can kill germs or a very chlorinated private pool. In fact, the ocean water is beneficial to the exit site.

* You are not allowed to swim in rives or lakes, or public pools as too many germs growing in those places. They can cause infection.

*You catheter exit site needs to be fully healed before you can swim.

*You should remove your catheter dressing before swimming.Catheter dressings should always to kept dry. It can prevent the growth of bacteria and germ.

* You should cover our catheter if your doctor tell you to do so. It can reduce the risk of infection effectively.

*After swimming, you should wash your exit site with water and liquid antibacterial soap. By doing this, it can help keep your catheter and exit site healthy.
