What Food Not to Eat While On DialysisDialysis, both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, replaces diseased kidneys to remove waste products and extra fluid, while a dialysis diet can help reduce the burden on kidneys and guarantee the proper work of dialysis. For this reason, it is necessary to know what food not to eat while on dialysis.

An overview of dialysis diet

In clinic, there are two common types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Even though the effects of these two treatments are similar, their mechanism is different. Therefore, patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have some common points in diet but also have some different points.

Foods not to eat for people on dialysis

No matter which type of dialysis you are taking, dialyzer can’t work as effectively as healthy kidneys. Just because of this reason, some substances like sodium and phosphorus are more likely to deposit in the blood. This requires dialysis patients to avoid foods high in sodium or phosphorus.

Foods high in sodium: Sodium can lead the body to hold onto extra fluid and increase blood pressure, thus causing edema and high blood pressure. Taking in less sodium and drinking correct amount of fluid can make patients feel comfortable before and after dialysis sessions.

Foods high in phosphorus: Extra phosphorus can result in bone, heart and skin problems, so dialysis patients should restrict the intake of this mineral. Phosphorus-containing foods include animal giblets, mushroom, sea food, cheese, and so on.

Potassium is one mineral that patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis should eat differently. If you are undergoing hemodialysis, you had better avoid high-potassium foods such as watermelon, banana, kiwi fruit, orange, melon, etc. However, if you are taking peritoneal dialysis, you can still consume these foods.

From the above content, we can know dialysis diet is so restricted that any mistake may worsen patients’ illness condition. If you want to get a detailed food list to avoid or eat, you can send email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com.
