Muscle Cramp and Headache in Dialysis Patients

2014-04-10 08:11

Dialysis is a life-saving method for people with kidney failure. However, it is a very annoying treatment and often causes a myriad of complications. Muscle cramp and headache are commonly seen in dialysis patients.

Muscle cramp in dialysis patients

Healthy kidneys can balance the level of phosphorus and calcium in body. However, the diseased kidneys fail to eliminate phosphorus from body adequately. High levels of phosphorus in blood will lower the level of calcium. Low level of calcium can contribute to muscle cramp in dialysis patients.

In addition, gastrointestinal disorder is commonly seen in dialysis patients. Vitamin D plays a vital role in absorption of calcium from foods. Reduced level of vitamin D also can lower the level of calcium in body.

Dialysis can eliminate extra fluid from body. If extra fluid is eliminated from body, it may cause dehydration. Dehydration is also a contributor of muscle cramp in dialysis patients.

Headache in dialysis patients

Blood fluctuation is commonly seen among dialysis patients. This is because blood will be circulated outside of body in hemodialysis. The blood volume change will cause high or low blood pressure, thus leading to headache in dialysis.

If the patients who just start dialysis suffer from headache, the condition may be caused by dialysis disequilibrium syndrome. It is a condition which is caused by quick removal of toxins from blood with dialysis. As the waste products will linger in body cells, especially cells in brain, it will cause dialysis disequilibrium syndrome.

The above are the complications of dialysis. For ways to control these complications, you can email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com  now.
