2012-10-29 21:14

Hemodialysis can replace a partial kidney function to remove metabolic wastes and fluids from body and plays an important role in maintaining patients' life. However, kidneys can work in continuously in 24 hours a day, but hemodialysis is usually performed 2~3 weeks a week. If patients on hemodialysis do not pay much attention to their diet, it is very likely to cause accumulation of wastes in body. Therefore, it is very important for them to keep a proper diet.

Protein

The patients on hemodialysis should increase protein intake properly and they are recommended to have 1.2~1.3 g/kg per body weight a day. Meanwhile, they should choose high-quality proteins like egg, fish and other animal proteins.

Calorie

The patients on hemodialysis should keep have 35 kilocalories/kg per body weight each day. The elderly and those who are inactive should reduce the intake of calorie to 30 kilocalories/kg per body weight each day. 40~50% of calories should be gained from sugar and the other should be gained from fat and proteins.

Vitamins

They should avoid too much intake of fat-soluble vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K. If too much vitamin builds up in body, it will cause toxity in body. The intake of vitamin C should not be more than 150 mg, or it will cause Hyperoxaluria which can threaten health.
