2012-12-23 16:37

Heart disease is commonly seen among people on dialysis. It is a significant death cause for the patients. The high risk of heart disease is associated with kidney disease itself, other health problems and side effects of dialysis. It is very important for the patients on dialysis to follow steps to decrease the incidence of heart disease.

Keep a heart-healthy diet

* High fat level in blood can raise the risk of heart disease. You should limit foods high in fat, especially saturated fats such as, eggs, whole milk, cheese and fried foods.

* Omega-3 fatty acids are not only good to kidneys, but also are heart-healthy. So you should increase the consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like cold water fish, flaxseed oil, canola oil and walnuts.

Exercise

Many people on exercise may become less active duo to physical problems or others. This is not good to maintain heart health. You should ask your doctor to figure out an individualized exercise regime for you. Regular exercise has the following health benefits:

1. Strengthen heart function

2. Make you more energetic

3. Control blood sugar level better if you have diabetes

4. Manage blood pressure better

5. Lower high cholesterol levels

Manage anemia

Anemia can lead to left ventricular hypertrophy which is a serious heart problem. Managing anemia is helpful to keep your heart work well. EPO and extra iron are usually prescribed to control anemia.

Control high blood pressure

ACE inhibitors and ARBs are first-line drugs for managing high blood pressure for kidney disease patients. Also, these medications have effects in preserving renal function. Additionally, you should limit the intake of fluids and sodium to prevent retention of fluids in body.

The target blood pressure for dialysis patients before a dialysis treatment is less than 140/90. The target blood pressure after a dialysis treatment is less than 130/80.

Reduce high cholesterol levels

High fats level can increase the chance of developing heart disease for people on dialysis. If your fat level is high, you should cut down the total consumption of fat in diet and exercise more. In some cases, medicines may be prescribed to help lower fat levels.

Control blood sugar level

If you have diabetes, you should control your blood sugar level within target level.

As heart disease is life-threatening for people on dialysis, you should take effective preventive measures to decease its incidence significantly.
