How to Detect End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) in Early Stage

2012-09-24 16:26

Kidneys have strong potential compensatory ability, so with the progression of kidney disease and loss of renal function, they can still undertake the basic physiological function of human body. This leads to many patients' ignorance of their disease. With continuous loss of kidney function and decline of compensatory ability, the kidneys are overloaded, resulting in large amounts toxins building up within the body. Eventually, End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) is caused.

Usually, ESKD manifests with azotemia, greatly elevated BUN and creatinine levels often accompanied with symptoms of gastrointestinal, neuromuscular and cardiovascular system, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, asthenia, difficulty sleeping, muscle cramps, and coma, etc. These manifestations often vary from case to case. Many kidney disease patients don't realize the disease until they have developed into end stage so that they miss the best time for treatment.

Actually, the occurrence and progression of ESKD is a long and progressive course. As long as patients pay attention to the early signs and symptoms, they can make an early diagnosis and treatment.

Early sings and symptoms of ESKD include:

* Tiredness and fatigue. This can be easily ignored.

* Pale face due to anemia. It may occur and develop slowly and is difficult to be detected.

* Swelling (edema). It can be noticed easily. In the early stage, patients may have swelling of ankles and eyelids.

* Changes of urine output: frequent urination at night and clear-colored urine.

* High blood pressure occurs due to: retention of water and sodium; damaged renal function of secretion renin.

* Loss of appetite. This may be the earliest and most prominent signs.

* Irregular menstruation.

As long as patients can be cautious to the above early symptoms, ESKD can be detected in the early stage.
