For people with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), their kidneys stop filtering the wastes from the blood stream and regulate other functions of the body, so they need dialysis treatment to perform the work. However, people on dialysis can still lead full, active lives by doing regular exercises.
Benefits of exercises for people undergoing dialysis
▪ Help control the blood pressure. Some people who take regular exercises on dialysis were able to cut down on blood pressure medication; in a few cases, they didn't need any at all. Good control of blood pressure can also help to prevent heart problems.
▪ Give patients more energy. People on dialysis who exercise regularly have more energy and feel less anxious and depressed.
▪ Make the muscles stronger. Through doing regular physical exercises, patients can have much stronger muscles and more flexible joints. It will be easier to do daily activities.
▪ Reduce the risk of heart problems, as exercises can also help change the fat and cholesterol levels in the blood.
What kind of exercises can patients choose?
Nearly any physical exercise will be good for ESRD patients. A complete fitness program includes 3 kinds of exercises:
Flexibility exercise -- allow patients' joints to move smoothly and help them bend, reach, and stoop more easily with gentle movements and stretching. It can be done daily.
Strengthening exercise -- makes their muscles stronger by working harder. This should be done every other day.
Aerobic or endurance exercise -- strengthen the heart and lungs to work efficiently and improve endurance. This form should start out slowly and work up to at least 3 to 4 times every week.
Receiving dialysis treatment might give patients some rough days where they do not feel as successful. However, keeping a regular exercise plan can help them live a active life. Remind to consult the nephrologists or ask free help from our doctor before stating any program.
