Carob, kidney disease, chocolateAs chocolate is limited for patients with kidney disease, carob is suggested in some cases as an alternative option. Is carob a better choice for kidney disease?

Carob is a debatable food for kidney disease patients. Some people think that carob is a good choice and beneficial for kidneys while others claim that this vegetable surely will burden your damaged kidneys.

Here is some ideas of carob on kidneys for your information.

Carob does’t have negative effects of chocolate, carob is very nutritious. It contains rich vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, calcium, magnesium, and the trace minerals iron, manganese, chromium, copper, and nickel. It contains approximately 8 percent protein and is a good source of fiber.

Compared to chocolate, carob is three times richer in calcium, has one third less calories and seventeen times less fat.

Carob sometimes is ordered for therapeutic purpose. It is known to halt serious cases of diarrhea in adults, infants, and animals. Carob helps alleviate nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach. One French physician successfully reversed kidney failure with carob. Use approximately 2 teaspoons carob powder in unsweetened cranberry juice four or five times daily.

But some other hold the opposite ideas for:

Carob contains similar amounts of potassium with chocolate which is is not a good choice for kidney disease patients. Milk chocolate (1.55 oz bar) contains ~208 mg of phosphorus and 372 mg of potassium. Unsweetened carob (~1.5 ounce bar) contains ~63 mg of phosphorus and 316 mg of potassium. Commercial chocolate cake mix without frosting (serving size 1/12 of the cake) contains ~106 mg of phosphorus and ~140 mg of potassium.

And when your kidneys are failed, the extra potassium will build up in the kidneys, leading to damages to the body.

Is carob a good choice for kidney disease?

You are suggested to note that some foods satisfy the requirements of potassium, phosphorus, and sodium content for renal diet, but with most things in life, you can have too much of a good thing – therefore the foods are healthy when eaten at normal servings sizes per day. Don’t overdo anything, moderation is the key. This also works in carob.
