What Diet should People with FSGS EatGetting the best nutrition is a balancing act for patients with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Since the functions of their kidneys are compromised, they require a special diet. Individual condition varies from case to case and many factors need to be considered, so it is necessary to discuss diet with a physician or dietitian.


Human body needs protein for energy, but FSGS patients' kidneys have to work hard to filter protein in a way that keeps it in the blood. Excessive protein intake causes the kidneys to work harder than necessary. A low-protein diet is recommended. Low protein foods include fruits, vegetables and carbohydrates such as pasta. Meat and dairy products tend to be high in protein.


Sodium can promote water retention and hypertension. Intake of salt is often restricted as well. The kidneys are unable to move enough sodium to the urine, and the accumulation can lead to a buildup of fluids. Restrict the intake of table salt, processed foods like cold cuts or bacon, and condiments such as soy sauce.


In FSGS kidney disease, potassium levels can rise and interfere with electrical conduction. In severe case, disruption of normal heart beating can be caused. Avoid high-potassium foods including bananas, oranges, dried apricots, carrot, potatoes, spinach, prune juices, etc.


Phosphorus is normally removed by the kidneys and can build up in FSGS, not only from diet but also from bone breakdown. Hence, limit the intake of high-phosphorus foods such as milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, dark colas, beef liver, dried beans, nuts and whole grain products.
