Patients with FSGS on Dialysis Twitch a Lot

2013-05-26 09:30

Q:My husband is currently at dialysis and seems to twitch a lot towards the end.He has a disease called FSGS.What are the possible causes?

A:It is common for people to twitch during dialysis treatment, especially their leg muscles. This condition seems to happen more often near the end of dialysis treatment. It can make the patients feel very painful and some patients have to terminate dialysis. It is necessary for you to know what are the causes of twitching during Dialysis.

Low serum calcium

As the kidneys fail to remove excess phosphorus from blood, it can lower the level of serum calcium.Meanwhile,if low-sodium dialyzate may be used during treatment,it will lower the levels of serum sodium rapidly. As a result, the blood vessels in muscle will contract and muscles can not get enough blood supply, thus leading to muscle twitching.

Electrolyte disturbance

An important function of kidneys is to maintain the balance of different minerals in blood. However,in FSGS,the scarred kidneys fail to perform the functions.Low levels of certain minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium may be associated with leg twitching.

Diuretics

Swelling is a common sign in patients with FSGS.Diuretics can increase urine output to relieve swelling. However, some medicines may interferer with the body’s mineral balance and contribute to twitching.

Low blood volume

Hemodialysis is usually performed 2~3 times a week.Between dialysis treatments, fluid and wastes will build up in body.If the patients have a lot of fluid intake between treatments,a lot of fluid has to be removed during treatment. It is very likely to cause twitching. It also can happen if you did not get all of your excess fluid off at the pervious dialysis session.

The above are the possible causes of your twitching. You can send more information about your condition to kidneyabc@hotmail.com  and we can help you analyze your condition.

Here are some tips to help you relieve twitching.

-Stretch your leg muscle

-Limit foods high in phosphorus

-Limit fluid intake between dialysis treatments

-Massage
