Horseshoe Kidney

horseshoe kidney basics

Definition

Horseshoe Kidney occurs during fetal development and it can be seen in one in 500 children. When the kidneys of fetus rise from the pelvic area and fuse together at the lower end, forming "U" shape. That is how Horse Kidney gets its name. This disorder is more common in male than female.

Causes

There are two theories to support the formation of Horseshoe Kidney. One theory hods that Horseshoe Kidney is formed during organogenesis, when the inferior poles of these early kidneys touch, fusing in the lower midline. Alternatively, some recent studies reveal that Horseshoe Kidney results from the abnormal migration of posterior nephrogenic cells, which then coalesce to form the isthmus.

Symptoms

Up to 70% of patients, both of children and adults, with this disorder will experience symptoms.

* Urinary tract infection is a common symptom of Horseshoe Kidney. In severe case, the infection can spread to kidneys to cause kidney damage. When UTI occurs, the patients can experience high fever and chill.

* Kidney stone can occur in Horseshoe Kidney. It may cause urinary obstruction and hematuria, fever, chills, cloudy urine and nausea.

* Cancerous tumors are more likely to occur in Horseshoe Kidneys than healthy kidneys.

* Hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis occurs as a result of urinary obstruction. In Horseshoe Kidney, deformed kidney structure can affect the excretion of urine, thus resulting in building of urine in kidneys and other parts of urinary system.

Diagnosis

If you are suspected to have Horseshoe Kidney, a renal ultrasound is usually ordered to view organs. This test aims at assessing the blood flow through various vessels. An intravenous pyelogram may be done to evaluate the secretory ability of your kidneys, the structure of the kidneys and so on.

horseshoe kidney symptoms

Horseshoe Kidney occurs when the lower pole of kidney fuse together, forming a horseshoe shape. It occurs in embryonic period and is found in 1 in 500 life births and is more common in boys than in girls. Most of people with Horseshoe Kidney will experience symptoms.

Urinary tract infection( UTI)

UTI is usually limited to urinary tract system. However, if not controlled, the infection virus may spread to the kidneys, thus resulting in kidney infections. UTI is not very common in children under age 5. When UTI occurs, the patients can experience high fever and chills.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones are commonly seen in people with Horseshoe Kidney. Normal urine contains certain concentration of crystals and chemicals. In right condition, the chemicals can prevent these crystals from forming stones. However, in Horseshoe Kidney, the inhibitors fail and stones may form. When stones form, the patients may experience abdominal pain, fever, chills, cloudy urine, nausea and hematuria.

Hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis occurs as a result of urinary tract obstruction. In right condition, the urine is filtered out by kidneys and then it passes through ureter and then the bladder. Finally, it is filtered out of body. If the urinary system is affected, it will cause urine to build up in kidneys and also hydronephrosis will occur.

Wilms tumor

Wilms tumor is an embryonic tumor of the kidneys and it usually occurs during childhood. Also, other renal cancer may occur.

Meanwhile, various cardiovascular, gastrointestinal problems may occur.

Symptomatic treatment

Conventionally, there is no better treatment than controlling symptoms of Horseshoe Kidney. The dangerous conditions that are often associated with Horseshoe Kidney mainly include kidney stone, urinary tract infection, hydronephrosis, etc.

Kidney stone

As for kidney stone, you will be prescribed with medications, or by using sound waves to break the kidney stone up an so they can be passed from your body. If this treatment method does not work well for large or recurring kidney stones, surgery will be required.

Urinary tract infection

Urinary tract obstruction

Urinary tract obstruction commonly occurs due to formation of Kidney Stones. Then, it may cause the vesicoureteral reflux. If these disorders occur, the surgical correction should be adopted.

Treatments for improving renal function

The above disorders can cause persistent kidney damage and finally Renal Failure may occur. Therefore, in the later stage of Horseshoe Kidney, symptomatic treatment alone is not enough to control the disease at all. The following treatment can help improve renal function and help you avoid developing Renal Failure.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is a new treatment based on traditional Chinese medicines. It is an external therapy and the effective medicines can be penetrated into injured kidney sites directly through skin and channels in kidney area. It can balance the acid-base levels and block the releasing of inflammatory factors so as to control kidney stone and infection. Also, it has remarkable function in stimulating the regeneration of impaired kidney tissues and cells to improve renal function.

Apart from the above treatments, if dangerous levels of toxins build up in body, blood purification should be used to filter blood.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues, and organs. It is used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood flow through various vessels.

Blood test

Blood tests are used to look for the level of waste products such as creatinine and urea, in your blood. Their levels can tell you how your kidneys are functioning. It mainly includes tests items, such as WBC, DC, HB and RBC.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis with urine culture should be performed. It can reveal if there is an infection and also the abnormalities of the urine sediment should be evaluated as clinically indicated .

Intravenous pyelogram( IVP)

IVP may be ordered by your doctor. In this test, a dye is injected into vein. It is used to view the structures of the urinary tract and help to firm the diagnosis. An IVP also reveals the rate and path of urine flow through the urinary tract.

Renal function tests

Renal function tests mainly include BUN and serum creatinine. Urea is the by-product of proteins and creatinine is a by-product of creatine. In right conditions, both of them are filtered from the body by kidneys and excreted into urine. However, when kidney damaged, their levels will increase for building up of them in body.

Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)

VCUG is a X-ray which is designed to examine the urinary tract. The images will show if there is any reverse flow of urine into the ureters and kidneys.
