Stages of Hypertensive Nephropathy

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2013-03-05 16:03

Stages of Hypertensive NephropathyRenal disease can lead to high blood pressure in many individuals. The opposite is also true: having high blood pressure increases the risk of developing Kidney Disease. Kidney damage caused by hypertension is know as Hypertensive Nephropathy.

How does hypertension hurt the kidneys?

Elevated blood pressure will make heart work harder and, over time, can impair blood vessels all over the body. If the blood vessels in the kidneys are damaged, they may fail to eliminate waste and extra fluid from the body effectively. The excess fluid in the blood vessels may then raise blood pressure even more. It's a dangerous cycle.

High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of Kidney Failure, also commonly known as End Stage Renal Disease. People with kidney failure either start dialysis or get a kidney transplant.

Stages of Hypertensive Nephropathy

Clinically, according to patients' illness condition and laboratory indexes, Hypertensive Nephropathy is divided into the following stages:

1. Microalbuminuria: abnormal excretion of albumin in urine with normal kidney function and negative urine protein;

2. Clinical proteinuria: positive urine protein, 24-hour urine protein >0.5g with normal renal function;

3. Renal insufficiency: decrease of Ccr and increase of Scr. This stage include non-dialysis and dialysis period:

Non-dialysis - Ccr is 80-10ml/min, 133μmol/L

Dialysis (ESRD) - Ccr<10ml/min, Scr>707μmol/L.

If you have high blood pressure, you must be especially careful about good control of blood pressure. For people with kidney disease, good blood pressure control can slow down the decrease in kidney function.
