Healthy Eating Guidelines for IgA Nephropathy Patients

2013-12-11 08:58

Healthy Eating Guidelines for IgA Nephropathy PatientsAs we all know, a healthy diet plan is very important for maintaining our health. For IgA Nephropathy patients, a healthy diet plan can slow progression of renal failure. The following is a healthy eating guideline for IgA Nephropathy patients, hope it can help you.

Low-sodium diet

It is recommended to eat 5-6 g sodium per day for a healthy person. But for IgA Nephropathy patients, sodium is prone to cause retention of water, resulting in edema, so it is better for you to limit the intake of sodium to 2-3 g per day. If your state of illness is under control, you are with normal urine output and you do not suffer from edema and high blood pressure, and then it is not necessary for you to limit sodium. Salt, processed food, pickled food etc are rich in sodium, you had better pay attention.

High quality protein

The intake of protein should also be made depending on your state of illness. If your kidneys function well, but there is heavy protein in your urine, you should have 1-1.5 g/kg protein per day. If there is serious damage to your kidney, protein should be controlled to 0.6-0.8 g/ kg. High quality protein produces less wastes, so it is preferred.

Control the intake of fluid

Too much fluid intake may worsen edema, so you had better control the intake of fluid.

As to other minerals such as potassium, phosphorous etc, you can decide whether to eat or not according to your physical condition.

There is not a specific eating plan that is right for everyone with IgA Nephropathy. What you can or can not eat will change over time, depending on how much kidney function you have and other factors. If you would like a personal dietary plan, please contact us. We are glad to help you.
