IgA Nephropathy Recurs after Kidney Transplantation

2013-02-26 17:21

Kidney transplantation is a treatment option for people with progressive renal failure due to IgA nephropathy. The risk of recurrence and resultant graft dysfunction in patients with IgA nephropathy is pretty high after transplantation, approximately 40%~50%.

Why does IgA nephropathy recure easily after kidney transplantation?

The general cause of IgA nephropathy is immunological. Immune system is a powerful defensive system of the body and can defeat the outside harmful stuffs in right condition. However, in IgA nephropathy, the immune system is activated improperly, thus leading to IgA deposition in mesangial area. Thus immune deposits can cause inflammation in kidneys, thus leading to kidney impairment. As a result, symptoms will occur.

When kidney transplantation is undergone, the diseased kidney is replaced with a healthy one. However, the immune dysfunction is still not corrected. The abnormal immune system will attack the new kidney again, thus leading to the failure of the new kidney. If the graft fails, the patients will have to return to dialysis again or do another kidney transplantation. However, many patients are afraid that IgA nephropathy will recur again.

Is there alternative treatment for IgA nephropathy to kidney transplantation?

Progressive renal function is due to persistent abnormal activity of immune system and deposition of IgA in kidneys. Immunotherapy can be an alternative treatment option for the condition. This therapy treats IgA nephropathy in the following ways:

* Degrade IgA deposition and discharge it out of body.

* Suppress inflammation in kidneys and prevent more immune damage to kidneys.

* Correct immune dysfunction and stop abnormal activity of immune system.

* Activate self-healing system of the kidneys to improve renal function.

Immunotherapy can treat IgA nephropathy from its causes. Thereby, it can prevent the relapses of the condition after treatments.
