Is There A Cure for IgA Nephropathy

2012-10-26 16:04

IgA nephropathy is glomerulonephritis, in which it is featured with IgA deposits in mesangial area. Once it is diagnosed, the patients have to reply on regular medications life time until their kidneys fail and dialysis or kidney transplant is required. Is there a cure for IgA nephropathy?

IgA nephropathy is an immunological disease. IgA is short for immunoglobulin A and is a kind of antibodies. In right condition, IgA can defeat the foreign harmful substances. However, in some cases, immune system is activated improperly and fails to distinguish the foreign substances and healthy body tissues and cells. As a result, immunoglobulin deposits in mesangial area in filtering units of kidneys. Then, an inflammation is activated by body to remove the deposits from kidneys, thus impairing healthy kidney structure. Some red blood cells and proteins will pass through the filtering units and end up in urine.

Regular medications for IgA nephropathy can suppress the inflammation in kidneys immediately and effectively. So the patients usually can have a quick remission. However, the immune deposits still exist in kidneys and also more deposits will be produced if immune system is not corrected. Therefore, suppressing inflammatory response in kidneys temporarily is not enough to manage the disease at all.

Immunotherapy is an alternative treatment for IgA nephropathy. It aims at treating the disease in the following ways:

* Immunotherapy can suppress the inflammation in kidneys effectively and immediately. It has less adverse effects than routine immunosuppressive drugs.

* It can degrade the immune deposits in mesangial area and make them dissolve in blood. Finally, they will be filtered out of body through circulation.

* It can correct immune system and improve immunity. In this way, it can reduce the incidence of other complications like colds, infections, etc. Meanwhile, immunotherapy can prevent more immunoglobulin A from depositing in kidneys.

* Immunotherapy can stimulate the regeneration of impaired kidney structure to improve renal function.

While there is no cure for IgA nephropathy, immunotherapy can help stop its progression and improve renal function. It is an alternative treatment option for you.
