Would A Low Protein Diet Help Stage 4 Chronic Kidney FailureWould a low protein diet help stage 4 chronic kidney failure? The basic requirements of diet for people with chronic kidney failure or CRF are to assist the medical treatment or at least not increase the burden on damaged kidneys.

Low protein diet for stage 4 CRF

The five stages of CRF are defined by glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Stage 4 CRF refers to kidneys are functioning with GFR of 15-29ml/min/1.73m2. In this stage, a healthy diet is very important.

In our body, protein is a necessary nutrient, but when it is ingested and used by our body, protein wastes are produced. Healthy kidneys have more one million of healthy nephrons that can excrete these waste prodcuts from the body excellently. However, if kidneys are damaged, excess waste products of protein will increase the workload on kidneys or even aggravate patients’ illness condition. Therefore, a low-protein diet may be helpful before patients start dialysis.

For people with stage 4 chronic kidney failure, even though they have a severe decrease in their kidney function, they are still able to live without dialysis. For this reason, a low protein diet is more likely to be helpful in this stage, too.

How much protein should patients with stage 4 CRF take in one daily?

If the person doesn’t have severe protein, 0.4g/kg of protein one daily is recommended, while the amount of protein intake should increase accordingly if he/she has a heavy loss of protein in urine. Besides, high-quality protein is more suitable, because it can supplement patients more nutritions and produce less waste products.

What foods contain high quality protein?

Lean meat, fish, egg white, milk, etc, are considered as this kind of protein. But not every patient with stage 4 chronic kidney failure can eat all of these foods. For example, if you have high uric acid, you may need to eat less meat and fish, because both of them can produce purine that is a main source of uric acid.
