Kidney Failure and Anemia

2012-09-15 15:25

Anemia is a common complication of Kidney Failure. Many patients will not feel symptoms of anemia until it has been present long enough to cause LVH of the heart.

Anemia

Anemia is a condition in which the hemoglobin lever is lower than normal standard. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of the body.

What causes anemia in Kidney Failure patients?

EPO is a hormone that regulates red blood cell production and one of the kidney function is to produce enough erythropoietin. If your kidney are failed, there will be less EPO which leads to less red blood cells and your body doesn’t get the right amount of oxygen, causing anemia.

What’s the incidence rate of anemia in kidney failure patients?

According a research, anemia affects about 30% of the kidney disease patients and about 90% of kidney failure patients.

How to diagnose that I have anemia?

Blood counts and changes in hemoglobin, as well as hemtocrit are the best ways to determine whether you have anemia or not.

Here are the normal hemoglobin results for your reference:

Men> 13g/dl; women >12g/dl;

Some symptoms of anemia also help your doctor to make a decision, such as fatigue, pale skin, chest pain, weakness, dizziness, numbness or coldness in hands and feet, irritability, headache, fast heartbeat etc.

How to deal with the anemia in patients with kidney failure?

The treatment goal is to increase the amount of oxygen that your blood can carry. Another goal is to treat the underlying cause of the anemia, that is, kidney damage.

Talk with your doctor and find the right treatment for you is the fundamental way to deal with the anemia.

Besides, your body needs iron to make hemoglobin and you are suggested to take more vegetables, fruits and lean meat to treat your anemia.
