Kidney Transplant: Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN)

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2014-03-07 03:47

Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a kind of glomerulonephritis, where the glomeruli become impaired. Without active treatment, kidney failure will result. Kidney transplant is a one of treatment options for kidney failure in MPGN.

How kidneys fail in MPGN?

Immune system is a powerful protective system of the body. It can protect the body against the outside harmful substances to keep our body healthy. However, in MPGN, the immune system fails to function properly and attacks glomeruli by mistakes. The hyperactive immune system will cause changes of glomeruli. The mesangial and endothelial cells proliferate and the mesangial matrix expands. Mesangial interposition into the capillary wall will be result. When the structural changes occur in most of the glomeruli, Kidney Failure will occur eventually in MPGN.

Kidney Transplant for MPGN

Kidney transplant is still a preferred treatment option for most of the patients with kidney failure. If it is performed successfully, the patients can return to a normal life. However, transplant is not a good treatment option for people with MPGN.

Kidney transplant is a procedure, in which the diseased kidney is replaced with a new one. However, in MPGN, after the transplant, the immune system may attack the new kidney again. As a result, the kidney structure will change abnormally, resulting in failure of the new kidney. It is reported that up to 70% of people with MPGN will experience kidney failure again after kidney transplant. If the patients have the second transplant, the failure rate will be much higher. Therefore, the patients with MPGN are not recommended to have kidney transplant. Here new treatment options are recommended to people with kidney failure in MPGN.

As high levels of immune complexes build up in blood, they are the direct cause of kidney damage. To treat MPGN, the first step is to clear them off from body. Blood Purification is applied in this treatment process.

To enhance renal function, Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy will be used. This therapy can stimulate the self-renewing of kidney tissues and cells, thus improving renal function remarkably.
