Does Lupus Nephritis Cause Edema in the LegsLupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can attack every part of body. If it causes inflammation in kidneys, Lupus Nephritis comes into being. It can cause many symptoms, edema in the legs is included.

Why Lupus Nephritis cause edema in the legs?

As we all know, kidneys are responsible for discharging wastes and excess fluid out of body while retaining the useful substances. When inflamed by lupus, kidneys can not work properly, as a result, sodium is detained while protein leaks into the urine. The most common causes of edema in the case of Lupus Nephritis is an impairment of kidney function or a loss of protein in the urine. Due to gravity, edema firstly occurs in the lower part of the body.

Treatment for edema in the legs in Lupus Nephritis

-Diet. When edema occurs, you should limit the intake of sodium and fluid. Because sodium will worsen the retention of water in the body.

-Exercise. Proper exercise can also relieve edema.

-Medications. The physician may prescribe diuretics that will help the body eliminating the excess fluid. Because edema is caused lupus, prednisone and other corticosteroids are generally prescribed to stop inflammation. Immunosuppressive drugs may also be used, such as cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, cyclosporin A, and mycophenolate mofetil.

Edema is just one of the symptoms of Lupus Nephritis, so just treating edema is not what we would like. What we should do is to treat Lupus Nephritis. Immunotherapy combines traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine. It can not only clean the immune complexes depositing in the kidneys, but also improve immune system. Though there is still no treatment for curing lupus, we can slow down the progression to kidney failure.

If you find that you have edema, treatment should be taken as early as possible so as not to delay condition.
