What Medicines to Take for Headaches in Kidney Disease

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2013-03-06 11:10

What Medicines to Take for Headaches in Kidney Disease"I have Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease and suffer from really bad headaches all the time. Not sure what is the best medicine to take for it. Any advice is much appreciated. Thankssss!"

As for headache medicines to take for people with kidney disease, Tylenol is usually recommended unless patients have a liver problem as well. You want to avoid Advil or Aleve if possible. When in doubt, call your doctor and she can prescribe you medications that you can take with relative safety to your kidneys. However, you should know that something over the counter (OTC) only helps with the symptom that is the headache, so it is ok only for temporary help.

Try to figure out the cause of your headache so that you do not have to rely on the OTC medicines. In general, causes of headache in Kidney Disease include:

a. High blood pressure or hypertension. Chronic headaches can be a sign of increased blood pressure. The kidneys need normal blood pressure to function, and they also release hormones to regulate it. When the kidneys are damaged, they may not produce enough of this hormone to maintain healthy blood pressure.

b. Anemia. The kidneys work to participate in the production of EPO which is necessary for the formation of red blood cells. If the kidneys are impaired, less EPO will be made, resulting in less production of RBCs (Renal Anemia). In this case, a specific kind of headache - 'anemic headache' can be caused.

c. The accumulation of wastes. When the kidneys fail to work efficiently, waste products will build up, leading to headaches.

The key to alleviate headaches in kidney disease is to find the exact cause and take right treatment as soon as possible. If you are still experiencing this problem, talk with your doctor as soon as possible or consult us online for the right pain management!
