Mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a type of glomerulonephritis, where the immune system damages the kidney. The abnormal stimulation of immune system may be caused by an identifiable cause, but more often the cause is unknown.

The prognosis of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis varies from person to person. A study shows that 80% and 68% of the patients survive about 10 and 20 years after biopsy respectively; 88% and 72% survive 10 and 20 years after apparent onset.

The prognosis of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis is affected by the severity of the glomerular lesions, proteinuria and high blood pressure.

High blood pressure can worsen the prognosis of the condition significantly. It can cause hypertransfusion in glomeruli and put a strain on kidneys. Meanwhile, it also causes overload on heart and the rest of the circulation. Therefore, high blood pressure should be treated vigorously.

Another significant factor of prognosis of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis is proteinuria. In some cases, there is only slight amount of protein in urine. However, occasionally there are high levels of protein leakage leading to Nephrotic Syndrome. Heavy proteinuria is a dangerous factor in worsening the prognosis of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. Therefore, nephrotic syndrome should be treated aggressively early.

Mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis is a hard condition to treat. The regular treatments only focus on treating high blood pressure, proteinuria, high cholesterol levels and other symptoms. However, those treatments alone is not enough to stop the condition from progressing.

As mentioned above, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis occurs as the immune system damages the kidneys. Thereby, to control the condition effectively and fundamentally, the treatment should be able to reduce the activity of the immune system.

Immunotherapy is an alternative treatment option for the disease. It can treat disease by suppressing the abnormal immune activity and regulating immune system. As this therapy can treat mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis from its underlying causes, it can control the disease effectively. Thereby, the prognosis of mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis will be improved a lot.
