2013-01-09 09:42

Nephritis (glomerulonephritis) occurs when the filtering units in kidneys, called glomeruli become inflamed. It can be primary or secondary to some conditions. Based on the severity and the type of nephritis, it may cause the following possible complications.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is a common complication of nephritis. As the filters are diseased, they fail to remove extra fluids from body, thus elevating blood pressure.

If left uncontrolled, long-term high blood pressure can worsen your kidney function further and increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, etc.

Usually, medications are prescribed to lower high blood pressure. You should take medications as prescribed to protect your kidneys from further damage.

Nephrotic syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome is often seen in complication of nephritis. It is a group of signs and symptoms characterized by high protein levels in the urine. It is also associated with high blood cholesterol and swelling.

Chronic kidney failure

Chronic kidney failure is an extremely serious complication of nephritis. If it develops into end stage renal disease, dialysis or a kidney transplant will be required to sustain life.

Effects on other internal organs

Nephritis is an immunologically mediated disorder. In some types of nephritis, immune system can also affect other internal organs besides kidneys. For example, in lupus nephritis, immune system can attack many of the body’s tissues and organs.

Acute kidney failure

In some cases of nephritis, loss of kidney function may cause wastes products to accumulate in body rapidly. In this case, you should need emergency dialysis. Usually, once the serious condition is corrected, dialysis will not be needed. However, it may develop into chronic renal failure if it is not treated timely and effectively.

The above are the common complications of nephritis. As most of people with kidney disease do not die of the disease itself, but the associated complications. Therefore, it is very important for the patients with nephritis to take effective precautions to prevent complications.
