What are the Complications of Nephrotic Syndrome

2012-09-20 16:17

As a common disease, Nephrotic Syndrome always makes patient's life very hard. People affected by this disorder not only have kidney damage but also suffer from other complications. Some severe complications may even threaten patient's life.

Complications of Nephrotic Syndrome

1. Infections. This is the most frequent factor of Nephrotic Syndrome mortality. With large amounts loss of immunoglobulins, patient's body resistance is largely decreased, which easily leads to infections such as infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin, peritonitis, etc. In severe cases, septicemia can be caused.

2. Acute Kidney Failure. As the kidneys lose their capacity to filter blood due to damage to the glomeruli, wastes may collect quickly in the blood. If this happens, emergency dialysis treatment is needed to remove the waste products and extra fluids from the blood.

3. Coronary heart disease. Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome often have hyperlipidemia and blood hypercoagulation status, so they are more likely to develop coronary heart disease.

4. Blood clots (thrombus). Causes include edema, reduce physical activity, venous stasis, hyperlipidemia and increased viscosity after blood concentration, etc.

5. Disorder of electrolytes and metabolism. Hyponatremia may occur due to repeated use of diuretics and long-term unreasonable no-salt diet. In addition, hypokalemia can be caused if patients do not supplement potassium while applying adrenal cortical hormone and large amount of diuretics.

6. Chronic kidney failure. Nephrotic syndrome may cause the kidneys to gradually lose their function over time. If renal function falls low enough, dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed.

Treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome is a complex process. While treating kidney disease, patients should pay attention to prevent complications. Therefore, correct selection of option and prompt treatment is of great importance.
