Kidney Stone Associated with Small Increased Kidney Problem

2012-09-12 17:47

Kidney stone is a mild kidney problem and usually the patients do not take it seriously. However, a recent study suggested that kidney stone is associated with a small but significant risk of developing later kidney problems.

Kidney stone is a common kidney problem and can be prevented and controlled very well generally. However, if it is associated with End Stage Renal Failure and other kidney problem is not unclear yet.

To make out the specific relation of presence of kidney stone and other kidney problems like Chronic Kidney Disease or other kidney problems, some researches carry researches about this question.

Over three million patients were involved in the study and they were tracked for an average of 11 years. Hospital records were used to identify episodes of kidney stones and subsequent development of Chronic Kidney Disease, ESRD or elevated creatinine levels.

During the follow-up, 0.8% patients had at least one kidney stone. The statistical date shows that 4% of them develop late stage Chronic Kidney Disease, 0.3% suffered from persistent doubled creatinine levels and 0.2% suffered from Renal Failure.

The research results showed that the rate of adverse renal outcomes associated with kidney stone is small. Also, the associations remained after adjusting for several other possible risk factors.

Additionally, the risk of developing kidney problems is higher among women than men and among younger people than the elderly over 50 years old.

The researchers suspected that two factors may be attributed to the later kidney problem. Firstly, the calcification process in the formation of kidney stone is a possible cause. Secondly, the stone may obstruct urinary system may lead to kidney tissues scarring.

The further researches aims at finding the specific mechanism of kidney stone and later kidney problem in order to find out the optimal way to minimize the adverse renal effects.
