1/3 Kidney Transplant Patients Readmitted to Hospital within 30 Days

2012-10-17 15:57

An analysis of 6 years of national U.S. Data has shown that almost one-third of people receiving a Kidney Transplant require readmission to the hospital within 30 days of discharge following the surgery.

This study involved analysis of over 32,000 patients who received transplants in U.S. hospitals between Jan. 1, 2000 and Dec. 31, 2005. While 31% of transplant recipients required readmission within 30 days, the percent of patients returning varied by hospital, from 18% to nearly 50%, a variation that could not be accounted for by conventional issues of center volume or demographics.

Risk factors that were associated with early hospital readmission include age, race, body mass index, Diabetes, heart disease, African-Americans (11% increased risk), obese patients (15% increased risk), diabetic women (29% increased risk). Besides, individuals who stayed in the hospital for 5 or more days at the time of their transplants were more likely to be readmitted within 30 days.

With this study, doctors must be aware that kidney transplant recipients have an extremely high risk of returning to the hospital in the first 30 days after discharge. Better outpatient management systems may prevent the readmissions very well.

"Kidney transplant is complex and the management of the first 30 days is complex," the study leader, Segev says. "We will never get the readmission rate down to zero, but it's highly likely we can get it down from nearly one-third."
