Infertility in Men with PKD

2013-03-04 14:22

Infertility in Men with PKDPolycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a significant cause of end stage renal failure (ESRD). Some reports show that men with PKD have an increased rate of infertility even before developing advanced renal insufficiency.

A typical symptom of PKD is numerous cysts in both kidneys. Cysts also can be seen in other organs, such as liver, pancreas, reproductive organ etc.

How does infertility occur in PKD?

The association between PKD and infertility due to dilatation of seminal vesicles is an important cause of infertility in men with PKD. The enlarged vesicles can obstruct the ejaculatory ducts, resulting in azoospermia or severe oligospermia. Thus, infertility will occur in men with PKD.

Apart from this cause, the onset of uremia can further reduce their ability to conceive. The high building-up of waste products in the body can adversely affects sperm quality and fertility.

Therefore, to improve the chance of fertilization, the couple should consider having a baby early if the husband has PKD. Also, men with PKD, whose analysis of ejaculation is still normal, should be offered the opportunity for sperm crypreservation, while those with oligateratospermia and normal testicular biopsy could be considered for early microscopic epididymal sperm aspiration for in vitro fertilization.

Meanwhile, treating PKD effectively can improve the chance of fertilization greatly.

Herbal medicine is alternative treatment for PKD. Different from the routine symptomatic treatments, it aims at stopping the cysts from enlarging and shrinking the large cysts. This therapy can slow and even stop the progression of PKD, thus proving more chance of conceiving.
