How to Manage Chronic Back Pain in PKD

2012-12-07 14:10

Chronic back pain is a frustrating problem in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). It can disturb the patients’ life significantly. Therefore, it is very important to manage chronic back pain in PKD effectively.

Causes of chronic back pain in PKD

* Enlarging cysts can cause increased abdominal girth, leading to increased lumbar lordosis that accelerates the degenerative changes in the spine, thus resulting in chronic back pain. With the enlargement of cysts, the pain can become more and more severe.

* As the cysts enlarge constantly, the adjacent the kidney tissues, thus resulting in back pain. Additionally, traction on the pedicle of the kidney and distension of renal capsule are also attributed to the chronic back pain in PKD. Generally speaking, the pain severity correlates with the size of the kidneys.

How to manage chronic back pain in PKD?

1. Physical therapy

Physical therapies like heating pads or ice massage are initially prescribed to patients with mild-to-moderate pain. In addition, heating pads and massage may also help relieve muscle spasm, especially if muscle spasm is related to the pain.

2. Painkiller

Painkillers, mainly NSAIDs are usually prescribed to control pain. However, as these medicines have renal toxicity, the therapy should be limited to several days in patients with renal insufficiency.

3. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a useful adjunct treatment for chronic back pain in PKD. It relive pain by activating the gate-control system in which large nerve fibers are stimulated and suppress small fibers that transmit signals in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord and or through release of neurochemicals in the central nervous system.

4. Surgical management

Surgery mainly percutaneous aspiration will be performed to PKD patients with chronic back pain. It can relieve pain temporarily. However, aspiration alone is inefficient because cysts will re-accumulate fluid due to an active chloride transport process.

5. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is an external therapy and is developed on the basis of traditional Chinese medicine. The medicines can be penetrated into kidney lesions directly through kidney area. The active substances can stop the cysts from enlarging by killing epithelial cells. Additionally, it can improve the permeability of cyst wall to promote the excretion of cystic fluids effectively.

The above are common treatment options for PKD patients with chronic back pain. If you want to learn more detailed information about the therapy, you can email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com.
